With low standby power, high efficiency, and robust protection features, it’s perfect for intelligent wall plugs, metering, and more.
The rapidly expanding Internet of Things (IoT) market encompasses a diverse array of applications, all sharing the core capability of data collection and exchange. Central to this functionality are microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators, which remain continuously connected to the network. These devices require a reliable, low-power, and low-standby power supply, ideally met by the Infineon CoolSET family of integrated offline power supply ICs.
In this reference design, the Infineon CoolSET ICE3RBR4765JG serves as a current-mode flyback controller, incorporating a built-in 650 V CoolMOS. The design operates in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) at a switching frequency of 65 kHz, producing a single 5 V, 600 mA output. The active burst mode operation ensures extremely low standby power consumption, less than 13 mW across an input voltage range of 180–265 V AC. Additionally, low EMI is achieved through built-in frequency jitter and soft start operation.
The key features of this design include power conversion efficiency and performance with an input voltage range of 180–265 V AC, efficiency greater than 75%, compliance with EN55022 class B standards for conducted EMI, standby power consumption less than 13 mW, peak-to-peak output ripple less than 100 mV, and a compact board size of 50 mm x 23.5 mm x 14 mm (L x W x H). The design also incorporates protection modes for Vcc over/undervoltage, IC overtemperature, overload, and open loop.
This reference design is versatile and well-suited for various applications within the IoT domain, including standby power supplies, power supplies for microcontrollers, and power supplies for standalone sensors operating on wired or wireless interface buses. It is also suitable for USB power supplies embedded in wall plugs, intelligent wall plugs switched by wireless relays, metering applications, and general applications requiring a small form factor within the 1 W to 3 W power range.
The design offers an efficient, reliable solution for powering IoT devices. Its low power consumption, high efficiency, and compliance with EMI standards make it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications, from intelligent wall plugs to metering and general IoT device power supplies. Its compact size and robust protection features further enhance its suitability for modern electronic designs.
